Former New York Mets pitching prospect Matt Pobereyko has passed away at the age of 31.

The cause of his death has been reported as a heart attack.

Pobereyko had been drafted by the Mets in 2015 but was released from the team’s minor league system in 2018. He later played for the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League and the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League before retiring in 2019.

“The Sioux City Explorers regretfully announce the passing of pitcher Matt Pobereyko on February 24, 2023” the team wrote.

Explorers manager Steve Montgomery said, “Words cannot express the grief and sorrow we feel today for Matt’s family, friends, teammates and his fans. “He truly loved being an Explorer and being a part of this community. He was as fierce of a friend as he was as a competitor. We will miss him as a baseball player, but even more so as a friend.”

He played for various teams affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Mets organizations.
