7 ‘Republicans’ Betray Trump, Join Dems To Approve Amnesty For Haitians
In a move that has infuriated President Donald Trump’s voter base, seven House Republicans once again joined with Democrats to pass legislation that will extend temporary protected service protections for tens of thousands of Haitian nationals.
The measure passed by a vote of 220-207, with seven Republicans joining all Democrats in support. The Republicans who voted in favor were Don Bacon (R-NE), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), and Maria Salazar (R-FL).
The bill in question is a version of legislation introduced by Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) and advanced through a bipartisan discharge petition led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). It directs the executive branch to maintain TPS designation for Haiti, which shields qualified individuals from deportation proceedings and allows them to work in the United States.
Roughly 350,000 Haitian nationals currently hold or are eligible for this status. The Trump administration had moved to terminate the designation in 2025 after determining that the designations were no longer in the national interest, though federal judges issued blocks pending further review. The matter could receive a final decision at the U.S. Supreme Court later this year.
The legislation now advances to the Senate, where a companion or similar measure would require consideration and passage for the bill to reach the president’s desk. If approved by both chambers, the measure would almost certainly face a veto from President Donald Trump, however.
The administration has consistently opposed extensions of TPS for Haiti, citing immigration enforcement priorities and conditions in the country. Previous attempts by Congress to override Trump vetoes on other legislation this term have fallen short of the required two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate, making an override unlikely in this case as well.
The seven Republicans who voted in favor of the legislation have been intensely criticized by President Trump’s base, including by some of their colleagues. “H Res 965 is backdoor amnesty for hundreds of thousands of Haitians who came into our country illegally,” said U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX).
“It is an abject disgrace and a shameful betrayal of everything Republicans ran on in 2024. All conservatives should vehemently reject it. Unfortunately, the bill was just discharged on the House floor with 219 votes.”
