REPORT: Trump Has Made His Selection For UN Ambassador

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly offered the role of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to a staunch ally in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a report from CNN.

CNN reported late Sunday night that Trump had offered the job to U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), citing two sources familiar with the matter. Stefanik has not yet commented on the nomination, while President-elect Trump has also yet to weigh in. The reported offer does come after previous reports that Trump was eyeing Stefanik for the role, however.

Stefanik, the fourth-highest ranking member of the House, has emerged as a major ally of the president-elect in the chamber. She was among the first members to endorse his comeback presidential campaign and was once viewed as a leading contender for the vice presidential role.

If the reports are confirmed and Stefanik ends up accepting the job offer, her departure from the House would trigger a special election within 90 days to fill the seat she would be leaving behind. Her replacement would likely be another Republican due to the district’s GOP lean, which the Cook Partisan Voting Index currently grades as R +9.

On the foreign policy front, Stefanik has long been a staunch supporter of Israel and a fierce critic of the Biden Administration’s handling of the War in Gaza. She has also criticized the administration’s handling of the War in Ukraine, as well as the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

The congresswoman has previously accused the United Nations of being “a hotbed of antisemitism” after it was revealed that the body’s Agency For Palestinian Refugees employed a Hamas leader. “President Trump rightfully cut off taxpayer dollars from funding UNRWA while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris outrageously reversed this decision and provided funding for an organization whose employees directly participated in the October 7th terrorist attacks against our most precious ally Israel. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris must permanently cut off UNRWA funding, revoke its tax-exempt status, and provide oversight of every U.S. dollar the UN receives,” she said in a September 30 statement.

She has also criticized the UN over its climate change goals, which calls on nations to reduce meat consumption, cut down on farming and pivot to electric vehicles.

“Democrats want to hand an additional $8 BILLION to the United Nations to pour into a slush fund,” Stefanik wrote in a February 2022 X post. “In case they’ve forgotten, our country is $30 TRILLION in debt!”
