NEW: Megadonor Turns On Kamala, Admits Top Democrats Didn’t Want Her As Biden Replacement
In a candid interview with Chris Cuomo on Monday night, Democratic megadonor John Morgan revealed significant behind-the-scenes opposition to Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy in the 2024 presidential election.
Speaking on the NewsNation program ‘CUOMO,’ Morgan claimed that some of the Democratic Party’s most prominent figures, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, were hesitant about Harris’s nomination as Joe Biden’s successor. Morgan, a Florida attorney and longtime donor to Democratic causes, attributed the failed ticket in part to the party’s internal fractures.
“He did not want to go gently,” Morgan said about Biden. “He nominated her, basically Obama did not want her. Obama did not endorse her for five days, Pelosi did not want her.”
Morgan suggested that Biden’s endorsement of Harris served as a defiant gesture towards Obama and Pelosi. “I think it was to say, F you to Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama and every representative that was pushing him out… and I think he was pissed,” Morgan told Cuomo.
Morgan pointed out a significant hurdle for the Democrats: voters had not selected Harris in the primaries or caucuses; her nomination was primarily driven by Biden’s quick decision to appoint his No. 2. “Pelosi told her California delegation, there will be a conference, there will be a caucus, there will be a convention,” he said.
This discrepancy was highlighted by many Republican politicians and commentators throughout the process. “We basically ran on this deal where ‘democracy, democracy!’ And then we didn’t have democracy in picking our nominee.”
Throughout his career, Morgan has been deeply involved in political fundraising and advocacy. He has supported figures such as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi. In August 2020, he contributed $355,000 to the Biden Victory Fund and hosted a fundraiser that raised $1.7 million for President Joe Biden’s campaign.
However, Morgan criticized the handling of campaign funds by Harris’s team, which he believes could jeopardize her future presidential prospects, despite not having personally donated to her campaign. The mega-donor argued that the mismanagement of funds should permanently disqualify her from running for president again. “The same thing is going to follow Harris for the rest of her career. She cannot be trusted with the money, and the donors are going to be, like, ‘Where is this money?’”
“We already saw what she looked like on the national stage,” Morgan explained. “Look, she’s got to be talented to have done what she did in California. I’ll give her that. But she was not ready for prime time, and then they rolled her out in prime time, and she got destroyed.”
In July 2024, following Biden’s endorsement of Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, Morgan publicly announced his decision not to fundraise for Harris’s campaign. He also expressed his concerns about her electability and stated, “You have to be enthusiastic or hoping for a political appointment to be asking friends for money. I am neither.”
At the time, Morgan told The Hill in July that he believed Harris will lose in November. For now, Harris’s historic vice presidency is both a milestone and a cautionary tale for the Democratic Party.
