NEW: Tom Homan Plans To Hire Outside Contractors To Assist With Deportations

As Democrat leaders in “sanctuary” cities and states continue to threaten open defiance of federal immigration law, incoming Border Czar Tom Homan revealed that he plans to look outside traditional law enforcement agencies for assistance with mass deportations.

Homan has repeatedly stated that he is willing to directly challenge Democrat leaders if they continue to obstruct federal immigration enforcement. While speaking on Fox News’ Hannity this past Friday, Homan directly referenced Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s threats to use city police officers to confront federal agents, stating that he is willing to “double manpower” in sanctuary cities.

“[M]y plan is, and I’ve been very vocal about this, we’re going to contract as much work out as we can, work that doesn’t require a badge and a gun, because I need badges and guns on the street to do the deportation operation,” he said. “So, when it comes to driving a bus, transportation, whether it’s ground or air, whether it’s processing, whether it’s other administrative duties, contract that work out, because right now, we’ve got badges and guns doing that work. Get them out of that administrative work, put more on the street, and that’s what we’re going to do. And if these sanctuary states and cities keep pushing back, I’ll have the extra resources to double manpower in those sanctuary cities.”

This, Homan continued, will allow DHS resources to be freed up in order to focus on more deportations. “Because if we can’t arrest the bad guy in the jail with one agent, it means I’ve got to send a whole team out into the field to find this person, and, for officer safety reasons, we need a whole team, rather than just one person.”

Homan has stated that the first priority will be to deport illegal aliens who have been convicted of a crime or already have an outstanding deportation order that is not being enforced by the Biden Administration and “sanctuary” jurisdictions.

In September, ICE Deputy Director Patrick Lechleitner sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) stating that as of July 21, there were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal histories on the agency’s non-detained docket (NDD), meaning they were not detained while they await asylum or immigration processing. “Of those, 435,719 are convicted criminals, and 226,847 have pending criminal charges,” the letter continued.

Under President Biden, the federal government has expanded the use of “catch and release” policies, under which asylum seekers are given court papers before being released into the U.S. interior.

A 2017 analysis from the Heritage Foundation found that 37 percent of migrants released under such policies never show up for their court dates. Another study from the Federation For American Immigration Reform found that the numbers are even worse when accounting for cases in which migrants show up for an initial hearing but never complete the process. In total, a little less than half of cases analyzed (49 percent) “resulted in an in-absentia order of removal due to an alien’s failure to attend a scheduled immigration court hearing.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Homan responded to critics who question the “humanity” of deporting criminal illegal aliens from the United States.

“Well, look, open borders are not humane. The only thing on that border right now that is humane are the men and women wearing that green uniform. They save thousands of lives every year. I’ve seen these men and women give CPR to babies that were thrown into the river by the cartel because when they’re chasing the boat of a smuggling load, what do the cartel members do? Throw the baby in the water, then the border patrol have to jump in the water and save that baby rather than arresting the smuggler.”

The incoming border czar is known to speak passionately about his experiences on the southern border, which includes comforting suffering children and recovering the bodies of those who perished while being trafficked by human smugglers.

“How many pounds of fentanyl didn’t get in the country kill Americans? Secure borders saves lives. And that’s where the humanitarian piece comes into place. Under Joe Biden, historic number of aliens have died crossing that border, 4,000. A quarter million Americans have died. The open border policies are killing aliens at record numbers, killing Americans at record numbers. And we’re going to put a stop to them. We’re going to secure the border,” Homan continued.

He then spoke directly to leaders of “sanctuary” jurisdictions who wish to stand in the way of the administration’s lawful goals.” Right out of the gate we’re going to concentrate on public safety threats and national security threats. What elected official wants to tell his constituency, ‘I’m okay with public safety threats in my community. I don’t want ICE’s help to remove these public safety threats,'” Homan went on to say.

“We’re going to make these communities safer. We’re going to enforce the law. And if they don’t want to help us, they can sit aside and don’t help. Fine. Don’t help. But don’t get in our way. And I’ve said this for the past week over and over again; do not harbor and conceal an illegal alien, knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien from us, because it’s a crime. Don’t impede us, because it’s a crime. Don’t obstruct, because it’s a crime. If you want to sit aside and let us do your job of securing the communities, fine, we’ll do that. But don’t cross that line.”
