JUST IN: Outlet Linked To Trump Impeachment Is Majority-Funded By U.S., Bombshell Reveals
A startling new investigation has revealed that the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), an investigative journalism juggernaut with a hand in shaping global political narratives—including the first impeachment of President-elect Donald Trump—is majority-funded by the U.S. government. The report was published by Drop Site News in partnership with European investigative outlets.
The OCCRP, which has worked on high-profile exposés, received at least 52% of its funding from U.S. federal agencies such as USAID over the past decade. Since its inception in 2008, the organization has secured at least $47 million from American taxpayers, with an additional $12 million already committed.
The findings, drawn from budget documents, audit reports, and interviews with OCCRP leadership, paint a picture of a journalistic entity deeply tied to American financial support. The U.S. State Department, through various channels, has emerged as OCCRP’s largest single donor. While OCCRP has publicly acknowledged receiving some government funding, the full extent of its reliance on U.S. dollars had not been disclosed until now.
Drew Sullivan, co-founder and head of OCCRP, defended the funding arrangement, stating that the U.S. government has never exerted editorial control. However, Sullivan also confirmed that federal grant agreements allow the government to veto top personnel decisions, including editorial hires, a provision that critics argue could jeopardize OCCRP’s independence.
OCCRP’s reporting has been undeniably impactful. The organization has exposed corruption in countries like Russia and China, often targeting adversaries of the United States. Sullivan proudly noted that OCCRP’s investigations have influenced governmental changes in multiple nations. “We’ve probably been responsible for about five or six countries transitioning from one government to another,” Sullivan said.
The investigation also revealed that OCCRP partners with high-profile media outlets like The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Guardian. These collaborations add weight to OCCRP’s work but may now face backlash over the organization’s funding sources.
Even OCCRP’s former collaborators are raising red flags. Germany’s NDR, a public broadcaster that previously worked with OCCRP, has reportedly paused future partnerships after learning of the extent of U.S. involvement. While OCCRP’s work often challenges corruption abroad, its critics point out that the organization rarely turns its investigative lens back on the United States.
OCCRP’s influence is hard to overstate. The organization operates in over 60 countries, employing more than 200 journalists and collaborating with some of the world’s leading media outlets. Its investigative reach spans continents, often focusing on areas of strategic interest to Washington. OCCRP has been behind numerous impactful investigations, such as the Panama Papers, Paradise Papers, and reports on Russian oligarchs, illicit financial flows, and kleptocracy. OCCRP collaborates with reporters and media organizations across the globe, sharing resources and expertise to tackle complex stories that span multiple countries.
OCCRP’s reporting on Rudy Giuliani’s activities in Ukraine was a pivotal element in the impeachment of President Trump. Critics now question whether the organization’s investigative priorities were influenced by its U.S. funding, particularly given the political stakes surrounding the impeachment.
The whistleblower letter that initiated President Trump’s impeachment proceedings mentioned Rudy Giuliani’s activities in Ukraine on four occasions. Concerning the U.S. government funding, some expressed their knowledge but no concerns about it. Georg Eckelsberger from the Austrian magazine Dossier stated, “We are aware that OCCRP is receiving funding from the U.S. government,” and added, “In our experience there was no influence on the journalistic work of OCCRP and OCCRP-member-centers. The investigations we cooperated in were independent, objective and committed to high journalistic standards.”
