NFL Legend Randy Moss Steps Away, Announces ‘Health Issue’
NFL legend Randy Moss will be stepping away from broadcasting to focus on an undisclosed health challenge, provoking a wave of speculation about what illness he may be facing.
Moss, 47, is taking an extended leave from ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” he announced earlier this month, saying at the time he was focused on an “internal” health issue but refused to elaborate further. In a statement, the network echoed Moss’s cryptic update, saying he was facing a “personal health challenge.”

Questions about Moss’s health began to run rampant after Moss last week appeared on “Sunday NFL Countdown” with sunglasses, explaining that his eyes had been affected by an ongoing health battle. “I just wanted to share something with you all,” Moss said. “I put a post up maybe a few minutes ago on Instagram just telling people — you were talking about my eyes last week — and I just want to let the viewers know that me and my wife, me and my family, we are battling something internally. I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show, I wanted to be here with you guys.” Viewers first noted a yellowing of Moss’s eyes which he began covering with tinted shades soon after.

On Tuesday, sports writer Larry Fitzgerald Sr. said Moss was battling liver cancer, a statement that was shot down by Moss’s son.
“66th NFF Hall of Fame Ceremony here in Las Vegas just heard that Vikings HOF Randy Moss has liver cancer. Let’s show the power of prayer and pull Moss through this… I love you, Randy,” he wrote on social media. Before long, legendary quarterback Brett Favre carried the claim in a post of his own. “Prayers to Randy Moss and his family,” he wrote on X, pairing his thoughts with a prayers emoji.
It wasn’t long before Moss’s son Thaddeus responded to Favre. “Brett, the support is appreciated, truly. This is not true. My father will address the world when he is ready to.”

During his player career, Moss cemented his legacy as one of the game’s most wily wide receivers, juking his way to the second-most touchdown receptions of all time and finishing fourth in career rushing yards. His 43-inch vertical leap overpowered every defensive back unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end, leading to the addition of “mossed” to the NFL’s lexicon. Despite never winning a Super Bowl ring, he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame just six years after his 2012 retirement. He has been a fixture of ESPN’s seasonal coverage since 2018.
