WATCH: Trump Rings Opening Bell At NYSE, ‘USA’ Chant Breaks Out
President-elect Donald Trump waited less than a day before celebrating his selection as Time Magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year by visiting the balcony of the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell.
Optimism about the incoming Trump-Vance administration’s plans for the economy was felt throughout the floor Thursday morning as traders applauded their native New Yorker and broke into an impromptu chant of “USA! USA!” CNBC carried the historic moment live where Trump, standing in front of the Time banner and accompanied by his wife Melania, smiled confidently and gave the bell a 10-second ring as he leaned into enjoying the moment.

Before basking in the warmth of the American economy’s beating heart, President-elect Trump delivered remarks in front of a standing-room-only crowd, touching on his thankfulness to supporters and allies in his nascent administration and offering unyielding hope for a better future. Some of the most prominent personalities in Trump’s orbit were present, including Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Trump’s nominee to lead the U.S. Health and Human Services. “This is an honor, a tremendous honor,” he said. “I brought some of my compatriots along. They’re going to do a beautiful job for you for the next four years. It’s really been something special, and I have to say, Time Magazine… getting this honor for the second time, I think I like it better this time, actually,” Trump joked, drawing laughter from the audience.
Jeff Sprecher, chairman of the NYSE, was singled out by Trump for his decision to tie the bell-ringing ceremony in with Trump’s selection as Person of the Year. “Jeff knows I like it because many years ago, I bought a building across the street. I wasn’t gonna buy it, and then I said, ‘You know, it’s right next to the New York Stock Exchange.’ We’ve had great success — 40 Wall Street… but you’ve really had success with the New York Stock Exchange. It’s an incredible group of people, and Jeff, you have done an incredible job.”

Markets have rallied in response to President-elect Trump’s victory, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossing and finishing above the 45,000 threshold for the first time. Investors have baked into stock prices a belief that the Federal Reserve will again lower rates by at least 20 base points at its December meeting, a decision they believe is unlikely to change in the face of stubborn inflation numbers and jobs data that have recently stalled.
