Royal Family Member Breaks Silence On Tragic Death

Princess Michael of Kent has broken her silence about the sudden and tragic loss of her son-in-law, Thomas Kingston, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 45 in February. The Royal Family was deeply affected by the unforeseen tragedy. Kingston, a 45-year-old financier married to Lady Gabriella Windsor, was tragically found dead at his family home in the Cotswolds in March.

His mother-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, said that his unexpected death came as a complete shock to the entire family. Additionally, the absence of any note or other indications from Kingston suggests that his passing was not planned in advance.

“Tom was a lovely man, so kind and thoughtful. They were very happy together,” she shared with Majesty magazine. She also opened up about the close relationship he had with Lady Gabriella’s brother, Lord Frederick Windsor, and his wife Sophie Winkleman, saying, “We often had them here with Freddie and Sophie and the girls for Sunday lunch.”

The 79-year-old Princess Michael revealed that the death of Kingston, which was ruled a suicide by a coroner in December, caught the family completely off guard. “We never had an inkling anything was wrong,” Tatler reported. Supporting Lady Gabriella through her grief has been challenging, but Princess Michael noted that Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor have been a tremendous source of strength for the family. Tatler noted that the family has come together to support Gabriella during this difficult time. Princess Michael has specifically praised Frederick and Sophie for being particularly steadfast in their support.

The Princess is a member of the extended British Royal Family, married to Prince Michael of Kent, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Known for her aristocratic lineage and connections to both British and European royalty, Princess Michael has remained a prominent, albeit sometimes controversial, figure in royal circles. The couple has two children: Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Windsor, who have largely led private lives despite their royal heritage.

Lady Gabriella, a writer and arts advocate, married financier Thomas Kingston in 2019, in a ceremony attended by senior royals. Kingston, a respected financier with a background in diplomacy, was a well-liked figure within the family, known for his thoughtfulness and close relationships with his in-laws, including Lord Frederick and his wife, actress Sophie Winkleman.

According to Lady Gabriella, Kingston was subjected to a new round of medication in the two weeks leading up to his death. The second cousin to King Charles explained that Kingston’s decision to take his own life was likely an “impulsive” act brought on by an “adverse reaction” to the medication he was prescribed. “It appears to me Tom’s impulsive action was likely provoked by an adverse reaction to the medication he had been taking in the last two weeks of his life,” she said in a statement to the Telegraph.

The death of Kingston was confirmed on February 27 through a statement from Lady Gabriella and other family members. “It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son and brother. Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family, and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.”

A representative from the coroner’s office previously disclosed to PEOPLE that the cause of death was identified as a “traumatic wound to the head,” and a gun was discovered near his body.
