Buckingham Palace Issues Update On King Charles’ Battle With Cancer
Buckingham Palace gave a momentous update on King Charles Friday, announcing that the English ruler will need to continue his battle with cancer into the New Year but that his condition is improving.
People Magazine reported on word from Palace sources who said that Charles’s medical prognosis is moving “in a very positive direction,” a relief for Royal Family observers who at one point feared that the the 78-year-old may not survive. As he approaches the one-year mark in his treatment, the king will remain in a “managed condition,” a Palace spokesperson said on Friday. “His treatment has been moving in a positive direction and as a managed condition the treatment cycle will continue into next year,” they added.

As evidence that his health is trending his in the right direction, King Charles’s staff released a truncated itinerary for the coming year showing him penciling in trips throughout the U.K. and abroad. Dame Laura Lee, chief executive of the cancer support charity Maggie’s, told Sky News that the update may indicate that Charles’s most difficult period of treatment may be behind him. “It’s very common for treatment to be ongoing for very long periods of time, as is the treatment that the Princess of Wales went through, which is an intense period of treatment over a year, and then it comes to a point where it’s on an end, and she’s on that recovery from some of the impacts of her treatment,” she said. “So we’ve got immunotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy. There are all sorts of different treatment modalities. And so it’s not surprising at all.”

King Charles has held the throne since September of 2022, after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. In January, he was admitted to a London hospital with an enlarged prostate and began treatment for cancer the following month. All face-to-face interactions with the public were canceled as he battled the disease, and he only took on a limited number of public duties since April, including a visit to a cancer hospital in London with his wife, Queen Camilla. He is the second member of the family to face cancer behind Kate Middleton, who has been public about her battle and shared semi-regular updates on social media or through statements from Buckingham Palace. In September, the 42-year-old Princess of Wales announced she had completed her chemotherapy treatment.
If his health stays on its current trajectory, King Charles will be a very busy man in 2025. “We’re now working on a pretty normal-looking, full overseas tour program for next year,” a palace aide told the outlet, adding that it was a high note for Charles and Camilla to conclude this year’s travels with a visit to Australia and Samoa. “Which is a high for us to end on, to know that we can be thinking in those terms, subject to signoff by doctors.”
