WATCH: GOP Senator’s Husband Refuses To Shake Kamala’s Hand In Awkward Moment

Social media users are praising the husband of Republican Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) as their “spirit animal” after he appeared to refuse to shake Vice President Kamala Harris’s hand during his wife’s swearing-in ceremony.

U.S. senators in the 119th Congress were sworn into office by Harris, who by constitutional law presides over the upper chamber and may cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie. Fischer, 73, has served in office since 2013 and has met Harris countless times over the past four years, especially given that the Democratic vice president now holds the record for casting more tie-breaking votes than any of her predecessors. However, the normally friendly affair turned icy after her husband Bruce Fischer glared at Harris over the Bible and turned down her outstretched hand, giving her a curt nod instead. Harris dropped her hand back down to their side as the trio posed for a photograph together. Bruce Fischer did not smile.

Other viewers laughed at how little respect Harris is receiving during her final two weeks in office. “Lol I could watch this over and over! The best,” one viewer wrote. “Protect this man at all costs!!!” another joked. A third suggested that President-elect Donald Trump award Bruce Fischer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his refusal, a quip which doubly served to criticize President Joe Biden’s decision to bestow the honor on Liz Cheney.

Harris disappeared for weeks following her loss to Trump, emerging later in a much-criticized online video in which she looked lethargic and amiss. Her public appearances have been sporadic, and when she’s appeared alongside the Bidens, she and First Lady Jill Biden often don’t acknowledge one another. The bipartisan distaste for Harris has extended to President Biden himself, who has griped to confidants in recent days that he shouldn’t have been so easily pushed out of the race and still believes he could have defeated Trump a second time. Left unsaid was whether Biden legitimately believes he would have survived another four years as president, which would have left him well into his mid-eighties.

After polling as the most unpopular vice president in American history, Harris’ favorability rating climbed north of 50 percent at multiple points during her abbreviated White House campaign, according to several pollsters. Allies have encouraged her to seek the governorship of California, which opens in 2026, while others see another presidential run in her future. Her departure from the White House will mark the first time in over two decades that Harris does not collect a paycheck from the government, another consideration as she seeks a new source of income while lying in wait for her next attempt at office.
