WATCH: Trump Jokes With Obama As Kamala Looks On In Anger At Carter Funeral

Vice President Kamala Harris was hot under the collar while watching former President Barack Obama swap smiles and jokes with President-elect Donald Trump at Jimmy Carter’s funeral, adding insult to injury more than two months after her stinging defeat.

The palpable bonhomie between Trump and Obama contrasted with the somber parochial setting where Carter, a Baptist, was prayed over before his funeral, set to take place later Thursday morning. Sitting together one row in front of Harris, the two former presidents appeared relaxed and in good spirits. Trump leaned to his right, whispering something which caused Obama to flash a bright smile and chuckle. Harris, perhaps hearing a shift in the bench behind her, turned past Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to glare at Trump and, upon seeing Obama lean in to hear what he was about to say, quickly turned back around, heaved a heavy sigh, and gazed straight ahead with a thousand-yard stare that suggested her frustration. Another camera angle by C-SPAN captures the levity between the two former presidents. Former First Lady Melania Trump, although noticing her husband not sitting still next to her, continues doing so herself.

Thursday’s eulogies to Carter are the year’s first and rarest of opportunities to bring Washington, D.C., together under one roof in remembrance of a figure who, although flawed, has nevertheless been cast as one of the few remaining good men to grace the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. His long arc of life beyond the presidency was marked by his devotion to Habitat for Humanity, the signature cause that inspired thousands of Americans to join him and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in building millions of homes for the underprivileged. President-elect Trump, who rarely has kind things to say about his predecessors, issued a thoughtful statement on Sunday after learning of Carter’s passing at the age of 100. “I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” Trump said in Truth Social post. “Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.”

Over the years, Trump has had plenty of negative things to say about President Obama, from suggesting he was born in Kenya to continually promising to repeal Obamacare. Less known are his criticisms of fellow Republican former President George W. Bush, who sat nearby, and whose presidency he has called “failed and uninspiring” due to the attacks on 9/11 and slogging the Iraq War.

With Trump just days away from returning to power, he is in a very different place politically from previous periods where he skipped the traditional funeral services for some of D.C.’s biggest giants. During the throes of the pandemic in 2020, he skipped the funeral of Democratic Congressman and former Civil Rights leader John Lewis (D-SC), and in 2018, he outright refused to partake in the funeral of former Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a sharp critic who he infamously mocked for being imprisoned as a POW during the Vietnam War.
