WATCH: Trump Trolls Rosie O’Donnell For Fleeing U.S. During Meeting With Irish PM
President Donald Trump took the opportunity to poke fun at longtime critic Rosie O’Donnell during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin on Wednesday. As the two leaders met in Washington ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, Trump made it clear that he was amused by O’Donnell’s decision to move to Ireland.
“Ireland is known for very happy, fun-loving people, great attitude, many in this room right now that I’ve met,” one reporter said. “Why in the world would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland? I think she’s going to lower your happiness level.”
The crowd chuckled at the remark, with the president doubling down on the joke. “Thank you, I like that question,” Trump said in response. He then turned to Martin and joked, “Do you know who she is? You’re better off not knowing her.”
The jab comes just days after O’Donnell confirmed that she had left the United States following Trump’s victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in November. In a TikTok video posted Tuesday, the former talk show host and comedian revealed that she had relocated to Ireland on January 15th.

“I’m here in Ireland. And it’s beautiful and warm — not physically. It’s actually quite cold,” O’Donnell said in the video. “Moved here on January 15th, and it’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming, and I’m very grateful.”
O’Donnell, who has been a vocal opponent of Trump for years, had repeatedly threatened to leave the country during his first term but never followed through. This time, however, she said she felt she had no choice.
“And although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are,” she explained, adding that she is in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship.
Despite describing her new life in Ireland as “pretty wonderful,” O’Donnell admitted that there are things she misses about the U.S., including her older children, her friends, and aspects of life back home. However, she made it clear that she has no plans to return unless certain political conditions change.
“I miss many things about life there at home, and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country. And when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she said, without specifying what policies she was referring to.
The former View co-host then lamented Trump’s leadership, suggesting it played a role in her departure. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know,” she said.
She concluded her nine-minute TikTok video with a message for her followers. “Protect your sanity is all I can say. Protect your sanity as much as you can, and try not to swim in the chaos if possible, but I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it,” she advised.
O’Donnell is just the latest in a long line of left-wing celebrities who have threatened to leave the U.S. if Trump was elected. While most have stayed put, some have actually followed through this time. Ellen DeGeneres, another outspoken liberal, also left the country after Trump’s victory, announcing her move to England shortly after the election.
As far as the president is concerned, Ireland may have just inherited a new problem.
