Trump Makes Bittersweet Announcement After Winning Golf Club Championship
A bittersweet announcement by President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested he may have reached the twilight of his golfing days.
Trump, who won the annual tournament at his Palm Beach County club, said the competition was “probably my last” after dominating on the same green where he was nearly assassinated last August.
“I just won the Golf Club Championship, probably my last, at Trump International Golf Club, in Palm Beach County, Florida. Such a great honor!” he wrote in a social media post on Sunday, the Daily Caller reported.
“The Awards dinner is tonight, at the Club. I want to thank the wonderful Golf Staff, and all of the many fantastic golfers, that participated in the even. Such fun!”
The full course is one of 18 around the world owned by the Trump Organization, though it is widely seen as the crown jewel given it effectively serves as President Trump’s backyard to his Mar-a-Lago residence. He has spent almost every weekend at the property since Inauguration Day, signing executive orders and holding impromptu press conferences.
One day prior to the golf tournament, the White House released photos of President Trump in golf attire watching a fleet of U.S. missiles rain down on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The Republican’s love of golf has been synonymous with his time in public life, giving supporters one final opportunity to relish Trump enjoying his favorite pastime.
His love of the game has trickled down to his grandchildren as well.
Kai, the daughter of Donald Trump, Jr. and ex-wife Vanessa, announced in August that she had committed to playing Division I golf at the University of Miami despite only entering her high school junior year last fall at the Benjamin School, a private day school in Palm Beach, Florida. The Daily Mail reported that Kai broke the news on her Instagram page where she praised her parents for supporting her dream to continue playing at an elite level.
“I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey. I would also like to thank my great team for getting me to this point,” she wrote, including photos from a recent campus visit.
After winning the ladies’ tournament at Trump’s West Palm Beach course, Kai thanked her “Grandpa” for teaching her everything there is to know about the links.
“I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support,” she added. “I would also like to thank my entire family for always encouraging and pushing me to be the best person I can possibly be. I would like to thank my friends for always cheering me on. Last but not least I would love to thank Coach Janice and Coach Jim for giving me this opportunity. I am super excited to be a cane and represent the University of Miami. Gooo Canes!”
