Tim Walz’s Post Backfires, Draws Ire Of Minnesotans

Failed vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has rubbed off on his beloved Minnesota Twins, who are starting off their season in poor fashion after he sent them his well wishes.

March 27th was Opening Day for the Minneapolis-based Twins, the start of a lackluster losing streak that has continued into its second week. The team was swept by its rival St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series and on Monday suffered an embarrassing 0-9 loss against the Chicago White Sox.

On social media, the Democratic governor sported a team jersey, cap, and foul ball glove as he sat behind home plate last Thursday. The sunshine and fluffy cloud cover gave way to Walz’s rainstorm of bad luck, critics were quick to note.

“The Minnesota Twins are 0-4 to start the season,” one popular X account wrote, quoting Walz. The quip struck a chord with the internet, and by Tuesday, the post had attracted more than 1.1 million views.

Nearly five months after helping steer his party to a historic defeat, Walz has become a sort of punching bag of American politics. His selection by former Vice President Kamala Harris was initially praised by progressives who credited the Minnesota governor with standing firm during significant cultural flashpoints, including placing tampons in boys’ bathrooms and surrendering Minneapolis to violence during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots.

However, the ticket’s resounding loss to President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance has provoked a wrathful review of Walz’s contributions to the outcome. He has claimed responsibility for Democrats’ losses in November, telling MSNBC’s Chris Hayes that Trump has brought a “mess” upon the U.S. as a result.

“I think Americans have had it, I hope they’ve had it and now we just need to do what we can do to make the case. Look, I own this, we wouldn’t be in this mess if we would’ve won the election and we didn’t,” he said last month.

“We have to make sure that Americans know it’s just not that Donald Trump is bad, but that we’re offering something better,” he added.

Just what Walz is offering remains to be seen. He has authored a postmortem on the election titled “Why Democrats Lost” but failed to call out fringe elements of the party, including pro-Palestinian activists in his own state, that refused to vote for Harris.

At the same time, he has placed his foot in his mouth on multiple occasions. He claimed baselessly that the 2024 election was stolen and admitted to being a “smart a**” with an “unhealthy” obsession over Elon Musk and Tesla.

Lately, he has been touring the U.S. in a bid to stoke enthusiasm for an expected 2028 campaign, during which he will almost certainly face other alumni from the embattled Biden administration. Pete Buttigieg, the former transportation secretary, recently declined to seek Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026, with allies saying he is preparing to mount his own second bid for the White House.
