NEW: Democratic Socialists Turn On AOC
New reports indicate that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is no longer the darling of Democratic Socialists within her party and in the U.S. at large.
Writer Natalie Sandoval with The Daily Caller wrote that the reason the New York congresswoman gained popularity was due to “outlandish progressive stunts.” However, Sandoval points out that in recent times she’s gotten cozy with establishment Democrats, a move that likely burned her bridges with the radical actors on the left.
Ocasio-Cortez is currently taking heavy fire from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) after her vote on an amendment being proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
A statement put out by the DSA against the vote said, “Yesterday, the US Congress once again increased spending on war instead of the services and protections that working people desperately need. In a vote of 221 to 209, Congress approved H.R.4016, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, sending a staggering $831.5 billion to the Pentagon. This money will be used to fund militarism abroad and Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.”
The DSA then stated that they “stand in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people in their ongoing struggle for liberation and against the United States-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza.” The organization said they are in full opposition to sending funds to Israel for any purpose.
Later in the statement, they reveal the reason for their opposition to Ocasio-Cortez.
“This is why we oppose Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s vote against an amendment that would have blocked $500 million in funding for the Israeli military’s Iron Dome program. While the Congresswoman voted against the defense appropriations bill itself, voting against funding for the imperialist military-industrial complex and the Israeli genocide, we were further deeply disappointed by her clarifying statement on her position on the Iron Dome,” the statement continued.
Not only does the statement deliver a scolding to the New York congresswoman, it also applauds Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Summer Lee, and even Al Green for voting to cut Israel’s military funding.
“Our country is obsessed with war. Every year, Congress votes to invest in death and destruction instead of health care, housing, clean air and water, or ending child poverty here at home,” Tlaib, a member of the DSA, recently stated.
