JUST IN: Special Prosecutor Appointed For Adam Schiff And Letitia James

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday announced the appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the politically sensitive cases brought against New York Attorney General Letitia James and U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), both Democrats — but they might not like her selection.

Bondi told Fox News’ Peter Doocy that a special prosecutor is critical to avoid any appearance of political animus that may influence a jury or judge’s decision about whether either defendant is guilty. James and Schiff are both accused of misrepresenting their residences for better mortgage rates.

In her stead will sit Ed Martin, the controversial Trump nominee who was shot down earlier this year to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Martin’s selection comes the same day as news that a grand jury has been convened to consider charges against James, who was referred to Bondi by federal mortgage authorities after discrepancies were discovered on paperwork related to her purchases of several properties.

Documents turned over appeared to show the Democrat listing her father as her husband — potentially an attempt to obtain more favorable home loan terms given to married couples — and undercounting the number of units in a Brooklyn brownstone in what may have been a bid to avoid costly safety upgrades for the building.

Schiff, meanwhile, was referred for claiming his primary residence at a Maryland property he purchased in 2009 and did not claim as a secondary residence until 2021. Schiff at the time was serving as a member of the U.S. House representing California, where he was constitutionally required to live.

Both Democrats have denied the allegations and accused the Trump administration of weaponizing the U.S. Justice Department against them — ironic, given the same argument was made against them by Trump during his various criminal and civil prosecutions.

“Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American,” the spokesperson for James said at the time. “We stand strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to stand up for New Yorkers’ rights.”

Schiff claimed that Trump conspired with Russian forces to win the 2016 election but ultimately never produced evidence he said he possessed. He was censured by the Republican-led House in 2023.

James successfully prosecuted Trump for inflating the value of assets owned by the Trump administration, which saw the president levied with nearly half-a-billion dollars in fines. He is appealing the decision.

To fund her case, James may rely on a $10 million line item inserted by Democratic lawmakers into New York’s latest state budget which allows public officials targeted with “retaliatory” cases by the federal government to tap the funds.
