NEW: Dem Rep. In Hot Water After Admitting Her Family Is Living In America Illegally
A member of the Democrats’ progressive wing may be in legal jeopardy soon after admitting that “half” of her extended family is still living in the U.S. illegally.
Democrat Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-TX) made headlines last month while declaring her patriotism for Guatemala, her country of origin, is greater than what she feels for the United States. Those remarks in Mexico City pale in comparison to her latest.
During a segment on MSNBC, Ramirez had the audacity to claim that she is looking out for members of her family who remain undocumented as they race to avoid deportation.
The Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda is deeply personal “for me, who is the daughter of immigrants, who half my family is still undocumented,” she told a panel.
Ramirez, who represents Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, is married to her husband, Boris Ramirez, a DACA recipient, and she ran for office in part on her pledge to secure legal status for so-called “Dreamers.”
On X, hashtags including #DeportDelia and #AmericanFirst underscored the backlash that was generated by her comments as users expressed outrage.
“She can, and should be kicked out of Congress immediately. Her allegiance is not to the United States of America, that in her own words,” one person wrote.
Liz Huston, a spokeswoman for the White House, called Ramirez’s comments about supporting Guatemala over America “despicable” and accused her of putting Americans last.

Her remarks echoed those of fellow “Squad” member Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who told a crowd last year that she is in office to support her home country of Somalia, not the U.S.
“The U.S. government will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do,” Omar said at a Somali gathering in Minnesota. “They must do what we want and nothing else… The U.S. is a country where one of your daughters (myself) is in Congress to represent your interests.”
“Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system… Together we will protect the interests of Somalia.”
The far-left group of U.S. House lawmakers is dwindling in numbers since its high point under the first Trump administration. Last year saw former Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) defeated in their Democratic primaries, and Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) will be drawn out of his seat next year if Texas Republicans pass their redistricting map, as expected.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), the titular figurehead of the Squad, is polling in the low double digits for the 2028 contest, a sign that progressive Democrats are still yearning for an alternative to the hypothetical establishment candidates like Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris.
