NEW: First Details Emerge From Trump-Putin Meeting

President Donald Trump welcomed Vladimir Putin to Alaska on Friday, greeting the Russian president as he disembarked from his jet on an American military field where the two are set to hold high-stakes negotiations about the war in Ukraine.

The two world leaders stepped off their respective aircrafts almost simultaneously at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage at about 11:09 a.m. local time (3:09 p.m. Eastern).

Both descended the jets’ exterior steps and approached one another with outstretched hands and smiles. Trump and Putin posed on the red carpet for pictures before shaking hands again.

Trump then ushered Putin into his waiting presidential limousine, where they were flanked by a translator.

Neither man reacted to questions shouted by reporters about the chances of a deal or what their conversation holds for the remainder of the afternoon.

Trump seemed to taper expectations about any deal that may result from the meeting, telling reporters he is “not going to be happy” if Russia refuses to go along with his plan to bring the conflict to a close.

“There’s nothing set in stone,” Trump said aboard Air Force One as he laid out how he plans to approach his first face-to-face discussion with Putin in years.

“I want to see a cease-fire rapidly,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be today. But I’m not going to be happy if it’s not today.”

In a separate interview, President Trump told Fox News “I would walk” if Putin refuses to concede a realistic end to the war that includes independence for Ukraine.

Dmitri S. Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, predicted that the Trump-Putin meeting may last anywhere between six and seven hours.

Trump said he plans to discuss land swaps with Russia, even though any trade is vehemently opposed by Ukraine.

“I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision,” he told the NYT, adding that “there’s a possibility” of security assurances for Ukraine but “not in the form of NATO” membership.

After several hours at the negotiating table, Trump and Putin are expected to address reporters in a join press conference, which will be lived streamed. The White House said Trump plans to depart for Washington around 5:45 p.m. local time (9:45 p.m. Eastern).

Russia enters Friday’s discussions in a position of strength against Ukraine. Its army has driven wedges between Ukrainian defenses to the east, while Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia is bolstering its equipment and manpower for a new offensive in the fall.
