NEW: Investigation Launched Into Drugs Used By Trans Shooter

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. announced on Thursday that his office will launch an immediate investigation into medications prescribed to 23-year-old Robin Westman, the gunman in Wednesday’s shooting at a church, to determine if they contributed to his violent final act.

Westman, who was found dead at Assumption Church in Minneapolis, Minn., had previously undergone a gender transition and expressed regret after doing so. Through his mother, Westman petitioned a court to change his name from Robert when he was 17 years old.

The disturbed young man has been identified as the murderer of two children attending a Catholic Mass at the church, just hundreds of feet away from where they attended school at the K-8 Catholic school.

Sitting alongside Texas Gov. Greg Abbott at an unrelated press conference, Kennedy suggested it’s “certainly” possible that medications given to Westman to support his transition may have contributed to his mental instability.

“Mass shootings are a health crisis, and we are doing for the first time real studies to find out what the ideology of that is. And we’re looking for the first time at psychiatric drugs,” he revealed, adding it was common in his youth for students to participate in shooting clubs without killing their classmates.

“Kids, my classmates, and other people would bring a .22 rifle with their guns to school and park it in the parking lot. Nobody was shooting… There’s never been a time in the history of humanity when people walked into a crowd, into a church, or a movie theater, or a school, or a crowd and just started randomly shooting. It’s happening in our country. It’s not happening around the world.”

Kennedy cited the level of gun ownership in other countries, which he claimed is comparable to that in the U.S.

“Something changed,” he continued, “and it dramatically changed human behavior.”

“And one of the culprits we need to examine is whether the fact that we are the most over-medicated population in the world. And a lot of those are psychiatric drugs that have black box warnings on them that warn of suicidal and homicidal ideation.”

RFK has made a review of common mental health prescriptions a centerpiece of his Make America Healthy Again agenda. It’s unclear to what extent Westman was taking psychiatric drugs leading up to his atrocity.

Compounding the difficulties in the search is Westman’s mother’s refusal to assist the authorities.

Mary Grace Westman, who supported her son’s gender transition, has hired a criminal defense attorney and refused to cooperate with investigators, according to NBC News. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said other members of the family are cooperating, but they have not yet located the mother, a resident of Florida.
