Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a freak car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night, a spokesperson announced Sunday.

The former mayor, 81, was hospitalized with a fractured vertebrae and multiple cuts and bruises, including injuries specifically to his left arm and lower leg. The incident occurred after his rental car was hit from behind, spokesperson Michael Ragusa shared.

“Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident. He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety,” Ragusa, who is the head of Giuliani’s security team, told the New York Post.

“The accident occurred after he re-entered his vehicle, which was then hit from behind at high speed,” the spokesperson added.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Ragusa said “America’s Mayor” is recovering and is in good spirits. “The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” Ragusa said.

Giuliani is expected to remain hospitalized for at least the next two to three days while he recovers. He will then be required to wear a brace for the fractured vertebrae. The mayor’s team is confident that he will make a full recovery.

Giuliani’s business partner, Maria Ryan, who is also a nurse practitioner, is helping to oversee his care. “He’s getting further tests and stabilization of his injuries,” she told the New York Post.

“Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father. Your prayers mean the world,” the mayor’s son, Andrew, posted on social media. “As a son, I can tell you I’m honored to have a Dad that I can call the toughest SOB I’ve ever seen!”
