BREAKING: Charlie Kirk Shooter Reportedly Still ‘At Large’
The gunman who shot and killed prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk is reportedly still at large, according to a report from the New York Times.
Moments after Kirk was fatally shot in the neck, police took a suspect into custody. Footage from the scene show officers arresting an elderly man dressed in a navy blue shirt, who was uttering “I have the right to remain silent.”
That suspect was eventually released after police determined that he did not have a weapon, nor did he play a role in the shooting, the New York Times reported, CBS News confirmed that the gunman is indeed at-large and a massive search is underway.
It is unclear whether the FBI — which is on scene and overseeing the investigation — has been able to identify a suspect as of this report. The Utah Valley University campus and surrounding areas remain on lockdown as the search progresses.
Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that police have not yet cleared the scene or declared it safe for the public.

Preliminary reports indicate that Kirk was killed by a single bullet, likely fired from a rifle. Investigators are reportedly zeroing in on a nearby area roughly 200 yards from the tent in which Kirk was speaking from, though it is unclear if the area in question was a building or not.
“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation,” FBI Director Kash Patel announced in an X post.
Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet and immediately slumped down leftwards about 20 minutes into the question-and-answer period, according to U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who witnessed the scene. Kirk was rushed to an area hospital but was unable to survive the blood loss.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us,” President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post shortly before 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
“Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
This is a developing story.
