UPDATE: Kirk Murder Suspect Still At-Large Despite Previous Reports

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the person of interest who was reported to have been in custody as of 7 p.m. Eastern Time has been interrogated and released. The gunman is still at-large as of this report, contrary to the director’s previous statements.

Fox News’ Karol Markowicz identified the second person of interest in an X post at 7:50 p.m. Eastern Time. Markowicz noted that she is unsure whether the suspect she reported on was still the person of interest in the case, or whether he was the suspect who was interrogated and released.

According to additional reporting from CNN, that suspect is about 25-years-old.

Kirk was shot and killed by a single bullet fired roughly 200 yards away from where he was speaking, investigators believe. Footage from the scene shows a person dressed in all black running across a rooftop overlooking the atrium where the event was being held.

Police initially arrested a suspect at the scene, though he was later released after investigators determined he was not the shooter. FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the suspect they believe carried out the attack was now in custody shortly before 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

According to CNN’s John Miller, police did not recover the killer’s weapon from the rooftop. “So it sounds like he managed to do his pre -operational planning, find that spot, line it up where he thought his victim would be, take out Kirk with a single bullet, pack up the weapon, maybe break it down, put it into a smaller bag,” Miller reported.

“If you get off that roof, you have access right to a parking lot where he could have easily gotten into a car and left. In the video canvas, what we don’t know; did they get a good image of him, or was it just the clothing? Were they able to get a license plate reader of a car leaving that took them to a name?” he continued before adding that a 25-year-old man had been detained as a person of interest.

Police will almost certainly be conducting searches of the gunman’s home and any properties linked to him in the coming hours.

Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed that the suspect is still at-larhe.

“I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this: We will find you, we will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law,” Cox said. “And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.

This is a developing story.
