The FBI’s Salt Lake City field office has released photos of a person of interest in the assassination of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk as the sprawling manhunt moves past the 24-hour mark.

Images show a slender, white men dressed in a black t-shirt with an eagle atop an American flag logo, dark pants, dark blue hate and sunglasses. The suspect appeared to be walking up a staircase in one of the images released by the bureau.

“We are asking for the public’s help identifying this person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University,” the FBI announced in a social media post. Anyone with information that could lead to the suspect’s capture has been urged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or to submit digital media tips here.

On Thursday morning, investigators revealed that they had recovered what is believed to be the murder weapon in a wooded area not far from the Utah Valley campus. FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls made the announcement during a press conference on the university’s campus.

The weapon “is a high-powered bolt-action rifle. That rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled. So the FBI laboratory will be analyzing this weapon. Investigators have also collected footwear, the impression of a palm print and forearm imprints for analysis,” Bohls said.

From where the gunman was positioned, investigators believe he may have been able to travel several miles away from the venue in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Police initially detained two persons of interest, though both were released after it was determined that they had nothing to do with the crime.

Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed that the shooter appeared to be of “college age” and was able to blend into the crowd after taking the shot. Investigators also uncovered footage of the suspect climbing onto a rooftop overlooking the tent from which Kirk was speaking, seemingly confirming videos obtained by witnesses before and after the shooting.

He then jumped from the rooftop and escaped through a surrounding neighborhood.

“We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual,” Bohls told reporters. “But we our confident in our ability right now, and we would like to move forward in a manner that keeps everyone safe.”

Mason added that the only footage currently being reviewed was obtained from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on campus and in the surrounding area. “We do have that. We’re analyzing it. But it is security camera footage, so you can kind of guess what the quality of that is,” he added. “But we do know, dressed in all dark clothing. But we don’t have a much better description other than that.”
