An agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was severely injured in an altercation with an illegal alien who tried to drive his vehicle into agents. The suspect was shot and killed during the incident.

An official with the Department of Homeland Security spoke with CBS News, saying the agent was in the middle of trying to make an arrest, which the man resisted, going on to run over agents with his car. An apprehending agent then opened fire on the man, killing him.

ICE officials confirmed the deadly incident and said the whole situation started due to “targeted law enforcement activity.”

“During a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm and struck the subject,” the statement went on to say.

“ICE said both the agent and the suspect were taken to a local hospital for treatment, where the man died. ICE said the agent was dragged and suffered ‘severe injuries.’ The agent is being treated at a local hospital where his condition has stabilized, ICE said,” the report said.

Officials with DHS identified the suspect as Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, who had a lengthy past of reckless driving. He entered the country illegally at an unknown date and time.

The agent injured in the incident was dragged by the suspect’s car, suffering “multiple injuries,” the DHS statement read.

“The FBI is aware of the incident in Franklin Park and is assisting law enforcement in response,” a spokesperson for the Chicago field office told the media. “There is no threat to public safety or further information available at this time.”

Federal agents have been increasing immigration enforcement activity following the Trump administration’s launch of “Operation Midway Blitz,” designed to help crack down on illegal immigration in the Windy City.

President Trump stated early on in his administration that he would be ramping up efforts to deport illegal aliens as a means of enforcing American immigration laws, while also decreasing high crime rates in bigger cities around the country.

This is a fulfillment of his campaign promise to clean up what he and other conservatives consider to be the previous Biden administration’s open border policy, which led to millions of illegals flooding into the United States during the former president’s single term in the White House.
