BREAKING: Multiple Victims Reported After Mass Shooting At Michigan Church

Multiple people have been injured as a result of a shooting targeting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday, according to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department.

Investigators confirmed that the shooter is down and that there is no active threat to the public as of 11:30 a.m. local time. Footage from the scene shows the building engulfed in flames, a detail that was confirmed by the department.

Grand Blanc is a suburb of Flint, Michigan.

Drone footage indicates that a massive fire had completely engulfed the building and its roof as of this report. The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

Witnesses reported that the shooter drove his car into the building before exiting and proceeding to open fire on churchgoers, according to on-the-ground reporter Anna Matson. At least one of the victims is a young girl who was shot in the back, Matson reported.

Investigators recovered what is believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED) from a truck in the building’s lot. Footage from local outlet WXYZ shows an armored vehicle with the Michigan State Police bomb squad arriving at the scene.

Photos circulating online show a pickup truck with two American flags mounted in the back crashed into one of the church’s exterior walls. A churchgoer told local outlet Fox 2 that the congregation heard a “large bang” and saw that the walls of the building were cracked.

They initially assumed that an accident had occurred and went to help, though the witness realized something was off when he saw the flags. The gunman opened fire at the witnesses vehicle as he was leaving the scene.

“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” said Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson announced in a video statement that his department is actively working with both state and federal law enforcement agencies. “The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said. “We’re working with fire and all those things that happen during active shooter training. This is a dynamic scene.”

The ATF’s Detroit Field Office confirmed that agents are on the scene. Investigators with the FBI are also on the ground, according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

Investigators are expected to share more information at a press conference scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

This is a developing story.
