Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Gets Mugged, Injured
The Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed that backup quarterback Skylar Thompson sustained injuries during a robbery that happened over the weekend. Reports revealed that Thompson was assaulted and robbed in Dublin, Ireland, on Friday night ahead of the team’s game. Local law enforcement officials “were aware of an incident involving a man in his 20s in the Dame Street area in the early hours of yesterday.”
Thompson, 28, has been on the injured reserve list and was unable to play with the team, which faced the Minnesota Vikings. The Steelers defeated the Vikings 24-21, and despite not being able to play, Thompson attended the game.
“We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin. We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident,” Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten remarked about the situation.
Following the robbery, Thompson was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin opted not to discuss the incident during the postgame news conference.
Steelers linebacker T.J. Watts was asked by reporters to provide a comment on Thompson. “I don’t have enough to comment on that,” he replied.
The NFL Players Association released a statement saying it was “relieved to know that he is okay.”
“The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place,” the statement read. “As always, our priority is the health and safety of our player members — especially as we continue to work on the player protections and well-being while playing international games — and we will continue to support Skylar in any way he needs.”
Thompson, 28, is now playing in his fourth NFL season, his first with the Steelers. On Sept. 10, Thompson was put on IR after sustaining an injury to his hamstring.
The Steelers-Vikings match-up was the second of seven games that will be played internationally during the 2025 season.
Thompson also has some experience as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He once replaced Tua Tagovailoa during the 2022 season.
The NFL star has accrued 721 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions over the course of 10 games.
