WATCH: Dem Congressman Accidentally Gives The Game Away On Shutdown Plans
While attempting to downplay the issue, U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) casually admitted that Democrats are fighting to secure healthcare for illegal aliens as the Democrat-led government shutdown drags on.
All but three Senate Democrats have voted against the House-passed temporary funding measure, which will keep the government funded through late November, three times as of Wednesday afternoon. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is demanding that Republicans authorize $1.5 trillion of additional spending over the next several weeks, something Republican congressional leaders and the White House have forcefully refused.
Democrats are also seeking an extension of Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits, which are set to expire.
Republicans have pushed back by stating that Democrats are demanding billions in additional spending in order to provide healthcare for illegal aliens. While speaking with Fox News, Vice President JD Vance stated that the GOP-passed Big Beautiful Bill “turned off” healthcare for illegal aliens.
“Democrats want to turn it back on,” he said. “It’s not something that we made up. It’s not a talking point. It is in the text of the bill that they initially gave to us to reopen the government.”
Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) have pushed back by claiming that Democrats are only pushing for healthcare spending to benefit American citizens. “It’s a total, absolute [expletive] lie,” Schumer fumed while speaking with MSNBC on Wednesday morning.
Some Democrats, including Reps. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Ro Khana (D-CA) have accidentally admitted that the party is indeed seeking healthcare guarantees for illegal aliens, however. “In terms of health care, the reality is they’re just not being honest. The amount of money that actually is going towards people who are undocumented is such a small portion of the Medicaid cuts or the Affordable Care Act, if at all,” Khanna said while speaking with Fox Business, seemingly contradicting Schumer’s statements.
“And so we can argue that point. But the reality that even the vice president would acknowledge that anyone who looks at the numbers will acknowledge is 90 to 95 percent of the funding we’re talking about is talking about funding for American citizens.”
Vice President Vance pointed to examples of Democrat demands during his own interview with Fox News on Wednesday morning. He specifically referenced two Biden-era programs “that explicitly gave the taxpayer healthcare money to illegal aliens that we turned off when President Trump took over in January.”
One of the programs in question provided illegal aliens with taxpayer-funded emergency healthcare at hospitals, the vice president added. “We turned off that funding because, of course, we want American citizens to benefit from those hospital services, not to be taxed, and then to have those hospital services go to illegal aliens,” Vance said.
He further pointed to the mass use of “catch and release” and Biden-era parole programs that made hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens eligible for healthcare benefits. The GOP-passed Big Beautiful Bill removed parolees from eligibility for taxpayer-subsidized credits that were once provided under the ACA by redefining who is an “eligible alien.”
