JUST IN: State Legislature Officially Locks In Trump-Friendly Congressional Map

North Carolina Republicans just handed themselves a win — and Democrats are fuming.

The GOP-controlled Legislature on Wednesday approved a new congressional map that’s poised to give Republicans even more muscle heading into next year’s midterm elections. The state House passed the plan 66–48, just a day after the Senate signed off — clearing the way for the new lines to take effect without the threat of a veto from Democratic Gov. Josh Stein.

“The motivation behind this redraw is simple and singular: drawing a new map that will bring an additional Republican seat to the North Carolina Congressional delegation,” state Sen. Ralph Hise, the Republican who led the effort, reportedly told colleagues during a meeting this week.

The new map reshapes key districts — especially the 1st, currently held by Democrat Rep. Don Davis, which narrowly backed President Donald Trump in 2024. Under the new lines, it becomes far more Republican-friendly, while nearby territory shifts to the 3rd District. Right now, the GOP controls 10 of the state’s 14 House seats — and this map could push that number even higher.

Republicans argue that the new map reflects population trends and ensures fair representation. Democrats, meanwhile, spent the week in a meltdown. Lawmakers and activists blasted the plan as “racist,” claiming it weakens the political influence of Black and Latino voters.

“You didn’t need to use racial data because every single member of this body knows about the Black population in the northeastern part of this state,” Democratic state Rep. Gloristine Brown shouted during Wednesday’s debate.

Protesters disrupted a House hearing Tuesday, yelling “racist maps” as they were escorted out. Another Democrat, Rep. Pricey Harrison, said out of more than 11,000 public comments submitted, the vast majority opposed the new districts — and she didn’t hold back her outrage. “I’m just so angry about what we’re doing to our democracy today that I’m having a hard time containing myself,” Harrison fumed.

North Carolina’s overhaul is part of a broader redistricting wave sweeping GOP-led states. With President Trump urging Republicans to redraw maps aggressively mid-decade, many are following suit.

And Trump himself cheered the Tar Heel State’s move last week on Truth Social, saying the new “improved” map would “give the fantastic people of North Carolina the opportunity to elect an additional MAGA Republican in the 2026 Midterm Elections.”
