WATCH: Biden Spokesman Admits He Barely Met With President After Claiming He Was ‘Sharp Every Day’
A former White House spokesperson for Joe Biden has been caught in a glaring contradiction after admitting under oath that he met with the president only a “handful of times” in more than two years—despite publicly insisting that he interacted with Biden “every single day” and that the aging Democrat was “sharp” and “asking tough questions.”
The revelation came from testimony by Ian Sams before the House Oversight Committee in August, which resurfaced this week through a viral post shared by the committee’s official X account. The exchange, shown in released video clips, paints a damning picture of an administration accused of misleading the public about the president’s declining cognitive health.
In a July 2024 interview on MSNBC, Sams had confidently told viewers, “When I deal with him, he is sharp, he is asking tough questions—that’s the President Biden that so many of us experience every single day.” But when pressed under oath about his actual face-to-face time with Biden, Sams’ story completely changed.
“I interacted with him pretty infrequently,” Sams testified. When asked whether that meant weekly or monthly contact, he clarified, “Very infrequent. I think I met with the president a handful of times during my tenure in the White House.”
The transcript of his questioning revealed that Sams could only recall two in-person meetings, one phone call, and one virtual meeting with Biden during his entire tenure. Among those interactions, he mentioned a Zoom call from Camp David and a conversation related to Hunter Biden’s testimony.
Pressed by lawmakers on whether his public comments had been misleading, Sams conceded that his glowing description of Biden’s mental acuity had been based on extremely limited contact. The video clip—posted Wednesday morning by the Oversight Committee’s X account—quickly racked up more than 600,000 views, with users accusing Sams of helping to conceal Biden’s mental and physical decline during his presidency.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of Biden’s dramatic political downfall in 2024. After launching his reelection campaign in April 2023, questions about his age and stamina intensified. The breaking point came during his June 2024 presidential debate, where the then-81-year-old stumbled over his words, appeared confused, and struggled to complete sentences.
The performance triggered widespread panic among Democrats. Major donors, party strategists, and even some of Biden’s closest allies began urging him to step aside, fearing his presence on the ticket would doom the party’s chances in November. Less than a month later, on July 21, 2024, Biden bowed to pressure and announced he would not seek a second term, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
At the time, Biden admitted his limitations, telling the nation: “I don’t walk as easy as I used to, I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to, I don’t debate as well as I used to.”
While Biden vowed to serve out his remaining months in office, concerns about who was truly running the show only grew. The Sams testimony now fuels suspicions that senior aides and advisers were effectively shielding the public from the president’s decline. Many argue that the episode fits a larger pattern of deception from Biden’s inner circle—one that misled voters about everything from inflation to border security while keeping quiet about the president’s health.
