UPDATE: Two Confirmed Dead, Suspect At-Large After Brown University Shooting
Two people are confirmed dead and eight others confirmed wounded in critical but stable condition after a gunman opened fire on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday evening.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the two fatalities, as well as the eight injuries, while speaking with reporters shortly before 7 p.m. Eastern Time. The press conference confirmed scanner reports of two fatalities and multiple people shot that went viral on social media after news of the shooting broke around 4:30 p.m.
Providence Police Commander Tim O’Hara further confirmed that the suspect — described as a male dressed in all black — remains at-large. Officials added that a weapon has not yet been recovered as of this report, while law enforcement is still working to determine what kind of firearm was used in the attack.
O’Hara told reporters that the suspect exited a building on-foot after the shooting. Initial reports placed the incident not far from the Barus and Holley engineering building, which is where the law enforcement response was largely concentrated.
O’Hara said he is working with the FBI and other law enforcement to obtain video footage from the surrounding area in hopes of capturing images of the shooter. To that end, investigators are investigating doorbell footage and anything picked up from nearby cameras, in addition to asking anyone with information to come forward.
The campus remains on lockdown as of 7:18 Eastern Time, while students and staff are being told to shelter in place. Police advised residents in the area to review any doorbell or other cameras they have in order to find any footage of a fleeing suspect.
“I am sickened by reports of a mass shooting at Brown University,” Rhode Island Attorney General Keith Hoffmann posted on X. “It is devastating to see this kind of senseless violence strike our community. Right now my thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, the Brown community, and the police and other first responders responding to this horrific attack.”
“Terrible news out of Rhode Island this evening. We’re all monitoring the situation and the FBI stands ready to do anything to help,” said Vice President JD Vance. “We’re all thinking of and praying for the victims tonight.”
President Donald Trump confirmed that he had been briefed on the shooting and offered prayers for the victims.
