Prominent Hollywood Director And Wife Found Dead, Homicide Suspected
Veteran Hollywood actor and director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michelle, 68, were found dead inside their Brentwood-area home in Los Angeles around 3:30 p.m. local time on Sunday. The case is currently being investigated as a homicide.
Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call at the residence around 3:38 p.m. and discovered the bodies of a man and a woman matching the couple’s ages. Sources later confirmed that the victims were indeed Rob and Michelle Reiner.
The deaths are being treated as a double homicide, with senior law enforcement sources indicating the couple was stabbed to death, suffering apparent knife wounds. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division responded to the scene, and a heavy police presence was noted in the upscale neighborhood, according to a report from People.
The investigation is ongoing, with no official motive disclosed, though multiple sources speaking to family members have alleged the killings were carried out by the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, a 32-year-old screenwriter who has struggled with long-term drug addiction since his early teens, including periods of homelessness and repeated rehab stays.
TMZ is now reporting an official cause of death on the case. The outlet reports that Reiner and his wife had their throats slit by their family member who is presumed to be Nick Reiner.
Nick co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie (2015) about his addiction experiences and had been living with family in Los Angeles for an extended period. He is alive, cooperating with police, and considered a person of interest, sources familiar with the investigation told People.
TMZ goes on to report that the accusations surrounding Nick Reiner stem from the Reiner’s daughter making the call to fire fighters claiming her brother was a suspect and dangerous. It is not yet clear what triggered the violence but the violence occurred after a heated argument between Nick and the family inside their home in Brentwood.
Police have not made any arrests in connection with the case and have yet to confirm Nick’s involvement as of this report.

The couple had been married since 1989 after they were introduced on the set of ‘When Harry Met Sally’
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the Reiner family announced in a statement confirming the deaths.
Rob Reiner rose to prominence as an actor playing the liberal son-in-law Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking CBS sitcom “All in the Family” (1971–1979), a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The show was widely known for introducing discussion of political and social issues into television comedy.
Born in 1947 in the Bronx to comedy legend Carl Reiner and singer Estelle Reiner, Rob grew up immersed in show business, making early TV appearances before landing his defining role under producer Norman Lear.
After leaving the show, he transitioned to writing and directing, initially struggling but finding his footing with the 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” Reiner co-created and starred in the film, which is widely viewed as a cult classic.
He went on to direct a number of highly regarded films starting in the mid-1980’s, including “Stand By Me” (1986), “The Princess Bride” (1987) and “When Harry Met Sally” (1989).
He followed with the tense psychological thriller Misery (1990), which earned Kathy Bates an Oscar for her unhinged portrayal of a deranged fan, and the courtroom drama A Few Good Men’s (1992), which featured an iconic courtroom scene between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.
Reiner was also a vocal political activist and staunch support of left-wing causes. Several prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), were among those to pay tribute to Reiner after news of his murder broke.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” Obama posted on X.
“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
