NEW: Marco Rubio Sends Quiet Signal About Future White House Bid

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has taken himself out of the 2028 presidential sweepstakes if Vice President JD Vance decides to run, making clear he would fall in line behind the sitting No. 2.

“If JD Vance runs for president, he’s going to be our nominee, and I’ll be one of the first people to support him,” Rubio told author Chris Whipple in an interview published Tuesday by Vanity Fair.

Rubio and Vance are widely viewed as the leading Republican heirs to President Trump, who is barred by the Constitution from seeking another term.

President Trump has publicly floated the idea of the two men joining forces on a future ticket, without specifying who would sit at the top.

“We have JD obviously, the vice president is great. Marco’s great. I’m not sure if anybody would run against those two. I think if they formed a group, it would be unstoppable,” Trump said while traveling in Asia in October.

Atlanta, Georgia, USA—4th Nov, 2024. Ohio Senator JD Vance speaks at the Vice-Presidential Nominee’s election rally in Atlanta, Georgia, one day before Trump-Vance’s victory in the elections.

Donald Trump has occasionally joked about finding a way around the two-term limit, but has also acknowledged the barrier is likely insurmountable. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles addressed the chatter in the Vanity Fair profile, saying Trump has no intention of violating the 22nd Amendment, “but he sure is having fun with it.”

Rubio made his comments as part of Whipple’s profile of Wiles, a fellow Florida Republican and one of Trump’s closest political advisers. The former Florida senator, once a vocal Trump critic before becoming a key ally, offered no daylight between himself and the vice president when it comes to the party’s future.
