NFL Star Charged With ‘Strangulation Or Suffocation’ Days After Huge Performance

An impressive comeback season in New England just hit a serious snag.

Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs is facing allegations of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery, according to a report by Boston25News.com’s Frank O’Laughlin. The alleged incident occurred Dec. 2, one day after New England’s Monday night win over the New York Giants.

Diggs’ attorneys appeared in court Tuesday, a little more than 24 hours after the star wideout carved up the New York Jets’ secondary for 100 yards and a touchdown. His legal team is seeking to keep the police report sealed.

Even if the details remain out of public view, the matter is unlikely to stay quiet inside league offices. The NFL is expected to request information, and depending on the facts and severity, Diggs could be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list while the case plays out.

The Patriots acknowledged the situation in a statement to Pro Football Talk.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

Diggs is in his first season with New England and has been a central piece of the offense, hauling in 82 catches for 970 yards and four touchdowns.
