Republican Congressman Jim Baird (R-IN) has been hospitalized after a car accident, Fox News reported Tuesday morning.

Baird, 80, is “responsive and in stable condition,” Fox News’ sources said. Details about the incident, which was made public just an hour after the death of GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), remain scant.

GOP consultant Kory Wood shared that Baird and his wife are “in good spirits” after the scary incident.”

“Rep. Jim Baird and his wife, Danise, were involved in a serious multi-car accident while traveling to Washington, D.C.,” Wood wrote. “Congressman Baird sustained only minor injuries and is up, walking, and in good spirits as he remains by his wife’s side. Mrs. Baird suffered multiple broken bones but is expected to make a full recovery.”

LaMalfa, 65, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) confirmed LaMalfa’s death shortly after initial reports, sharing his condolences.

“Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” Emmer wrote on X. “Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children.”

LaMalfa, a fourth-generation rice farmer who carried Northern California’s agricultural roots all the way to Congress, was a lifelong resident of the state and one of its most forceful voices in Washington.

Doug LaMalfa spent his life in rural Northern California, where he was raised in a farming family that traced its roots back generations. He attended local schools and grew up working the land, learning early lessons about hard work, self-reliance, and service to his community.
