The Minneapolis Police Department pulled back after a large mob of left-wing rioters gathered around the scene of an ICE-involved shooting in South Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon.

Minneapolis Police had been guarding the scene of the shooting at the intersection of East 34th Street and Portland Avenue in South Minneapolis. The shooting occurred roughly a mile from the site of George Floyd’s death in 2020.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time, when federal agents were conducting immigration enforcement operations in the area. Footage shows at least four agents approaching a vehicle that was attempting to box agents in when the woman reversed and then accelerated forward.

Multiple angles of the incident show a federal agent standing directly in front of the vehicle when the driver accelerated forward. At that point, the agent opened fire, killing the driver, a 37-year-old woman, when at least one bullet entered the vehicle through the front windshield.

A large crowd of rioters soon gathered around the scene and proceeded to pelt federal agents with projectiles. Agents deployed less than lethal crowd control munitions before leaving the scene shortly afterwards.

After federal agents pulled back, a contingent of Minneapolis Police officers set up caution tape around the scene and proceeded to guard the area. Fox News noted that the crowd continued to grow, numbering upwards of 400 as of 2 p.m. local time.

Shortly after that, police pulled back from the scene as the mob could be seen hurling snowballs and other projectiles as they made their exit. Some of the vehicles appeared to have windows smashed out as the mob continued to advance up 34th Street.

Aerial footage obtained by local outlet KMSP shows a large crowd continuing to advance up 34th Street as of 2:41 p.m. local time. Members of the crowd — some of whom could be seen waving Mexican flags — proceeded to harass motorists as they marched up the public street.

Additional protesters continued to gather around the scene of the shooting, where a makeshift memorial was set up.

While speaking at a press conference, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced that the state National Guard had been placed on notice for potential mobilization. The governor encouraged residents to engage in “peaceful protests” but warned that blocking roadways, hurling objects and other criminal conduct would be met with a law enforcement response.

Both Walz and Minneapolis Governor Tim Walz had earlier claimed that the federal agent had no right to self-defense despite multiple videos of the incident.

“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly—that is bullshit. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed,” Frey declared.

“There’s little I can say that’ll make this situation better, but I do have a message for our community, for our city, and I do have a message for ICE. To ICE: Get the f**k out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite. People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Longterm Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, somebody is dead.”

Walz said similar in an X post of his own. “I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe the propaganda machine,” the governor wrote. “The state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”
