An aircraft carrying eight people crashed during a takeoff attempt Sunday night in Maine, according to federal officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a Bombardier Challenger 600 went down while departing Bangor International Airport at about 7:45 p.m. local time on Jan. 25.

“A Bombardier Challenger 600 crashed as it was taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine around 7:45 p.m local time on Sunday, Jan. 25,” the FAA said in a post on X.

“Eight people were on board. The FAA and NTSB will investigate,” the agency added, noting the information is “preliminary and subject to change.”

The crash triggered an immediate response from emergency crews and forced the airport to shut down, disrupting air travel in and out of the region.

The airport remained closed Monday morning, according to a joint news release posted to Facebook by the Bangor, Maine, Police Department and Bangor International Airport.

“Multiple emergency crews responded to an aircraft accident at Bangor International Airport (BGR) Sunday night,” the release said. “At approximately 7:45 p.m. there were reports of an incident involving a single aircraft that was departing from BGR.”

Officials warned travelers to expect continued disruptions.

“The airport remains closed at this time. There are numerous flight cancellations and diversions,” the release said.

The incident comes as airlines nationwide grapple with widespread delays and cancellations tied to harsh winter weather battering large portions of the country, compounding travel headaches for passengers already facing icy conditions and reduced flight schedules.

Federal investigators are expected to examine the cause of the crash as the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board begin their probe.
