REPORT: Guthrie Family Member Pinned As Prime Suspect In Nancy’s Disappearance

A dramatic new turn has emerged in the kidnapping of TODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, with a family member now under scrutiny, according to veteran journalist Ashleigh Banfield.

Banfield reported Tuesday night that police are looking at Tommaso Cioni, the husband of Guthrie’s sister, Annie, as a possible suspect in the case, citing a trusted law enforcement source.

Cioni is married to Annie Guthrie, and investigators believe the couple were the last people to see Nancy before she vanished. Annie reportedly had dinner with her mother Saturday night. It remains unclear whether Cioni was present.

Nancy’s family contacted police Sunday after the 84-year-old failed to appear at her regular church service, triggering an urgent search that has since intensified.

According to Banfield, investigators have towed Annie’s vehicle, which she said has “some connection” to the 50-year-old Cioni. Banfield also reported that security cameras at Nancy’s Tucson, Arizona, home were smashed.

Earlier Tuesday, NewsNation aired video showing a trail of blood leading to the front steps of the home. The Los Angeles Times separately reported that blood found inside the house belonged to Nancy.

Authorities have also received what is believed to be a ransom note demanding money in exchange for Nancy’s release. The note was sent to media outlets, and both the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are working to determine whether it is authentic.

Police say Nancy was abducted from her home overnight during the weekend. Investigators have emphasized that time is critical, noting that she is frail, in poor health, and was taken without the daily medication she needs to survive.

Attempts to reach Cioni for comment have so far gone unanswered. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to confirm Banfield’s reporting, saying only that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
