WATCH: Trump Supporter Gets On Stage During Dems’ SOTU Protest: ‘Go Trump!’
A Trump supporter briefly hijacked Sen. Chris Murphy’s remarks Tuesday night as the Connecticut Democrat took part in an alternative rally timed to counter President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
While Trump delivered his nationally televised speech before a joint session of Congress, Murphy and other Democrats gathered on the National Mall for what organizers called the “People’s State of the Union,” an event backed by the left-leaning advocacy group MoveOn.org.
Murphy was introducing a guest speaker when a man in a red hat and green hooded sweatshirt rushed forward and shouted his support for the president.
“She came here to the United States to speak truth to power, to explain the trials and tribulations that every immigrant, that every refugee, goes through to get here and to press this country,” Murphy said, just before the interruption.
“Go Trump,” the protester yelled from near the stage.
“Thanks, man. Thanks, buddy,” Murphy replied as security moved in and escorted the man away.

The moment underscored the stark divide on display in Washington that night. Inside the Capitol, Trump laid out his administration’s agenda, touting border enforcement, economic growth and what he has described as a return to “law and order.” Outside, progressive groups sought to counter the president’s message with a competing narrative focused heavily on immigration and social policy.
“Go Trump! Hey, Murphy, you’re a scumbag.”

Murphy’s guest at the rally was Fereshteh Ganjavi, founder and executive director of Elena’s Light, a Connecticut-based nonprofit that works with refugee women and children. Murphy’s office said the organization helps refugees integrate into life in the United States.
The senator has been a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies and chose not to attend the president’s address in the House chamber. Instead, he joined fellow Democrats at the outdoor event, which ran concurrently with the speech.

The Trump supporter’s outburst was brief but symbolic, highlighting the enthusiasm among Trump supporters even in heavily Democratic spaces. Security quickly restored order, and the rally continued.
Trump’s State of the Union focused in part on tightening immigration enforcement and ramping up deportations, drawing sharp applause from Republicans inside the chamber. Democrats, including Murphy, have accused the administration of being too aggressive at the border and in interior enforcement.
