Bobby J. Brown, the veteran character actor best known for playing Officer Bobby Brown on The Wire, has died at 62 after a tragic barn fire in Maryland.

Brown’s talent agent, Dr. Albert Bramante, confirmed the actor’s sudden passing and remembered him as a performer whose grit and authenticity stood out both on and off screen.

“Bobby J. Brown was a uniquely talented actor and a man of great character. From his deep roots as a Golden Gloves champion to his impactful performances on screen, Bobby brought an unmistakable authenticity to everything he did,” Bramante said.

“He was a dedicated professional and a true joy to represent. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to a press release obtained by Fox News Digital, firefighters in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, were called to a barn fire with entrapment just after 10 p.m. on Feb. 26. Crews arrived to find the 50-by-100-foot structure nearly engulfed.

Family members told firefighters that one person was still inside. After the blaze was brought under control, responders found a deceased man in the barn.

Authorities said the victim had been attempting to jump-start a vehicle inside the structure. According to the release, he contacted his wife and asked her to bring a fire extinguisher. But by the time she came outside, the barn was already consumed by flames.

Brown’s wife suffered burns to her hands and was taken to the hospital. The county release did not identify Brown by name, but TMZ later reported that the actor had died in the fire. Brown’s daughter told the outlet that her father died from smoke inhalation.

TMZ also reported that the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death “diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation.” The manner of death was ruled an accident.

Brown built a steady career playing tough, believable characters, becoming a familiar face in crime dramas and street-level roles that demanded realism. His breakout role came as Officer Bobby Brown on The Wire, the acclaimed HBO series that remains one of television’s most respected dramas.

He later appeared in Law & Order: SVU and We Own This City, continuing to bring the same grounded presence that made him memorable to fans.

Off screen, Brown’s background as a Golden Gloves champion gave him a lived-in toughness that translated naturally to the screen. Friends and colleagues remembered him as more than just a strong actor, describing him as a man of character and professionalism.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
