Saturday’s joint military operations launched by the United States and Israel targeted several key leaders of the Iranian regime, including the compound home of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in central Tehran.

Satellite imagery released by the New York Times shows extensive damage to Khamenei’s compound, with buildings reduced to rubble and smoke visible in the frame. Iranian state media initially reported explosions near the site but did not confirm casualties or the leader’s presence.

According to a report from Reuters, Khamenei, 86, had been relocated to a secure undisclosed location prior to the strikes. Roads to the compound appeared to have been sealed off by the time strikes began around 2:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, the outlet reported.

The strikes on Khamenei’s compound formed part of a broader campaign aimed at Iranian leadership and infrastructure. Israeli officials stated that the operations targeted senior political and military figures, including Khamenei himself, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Abdolrahim Mousavi.

It is unclear whether the nation’s most senior leaders have indeed been struck as of this report, several senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and political officials were killed in the opening round of the strikes.

Additionally, strikes hit the homes of ministers, military chiefs, and installations linked to the Defense and Intelligence Ministries, as well as a presidential facility. The Iranian Parliament building was also struck during a session, though casualty figures were are not available, according to a report from the Jerusalem Post.

Beyond leadership targets, the operations focused on military installations and strategic assets. The U.S. Department of Defense codenamed the effort “Operation Epic Fury,” while Israel referred to it as “Operation Roaring Lion” or “Shield of Judah.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported dozens of military targets, including those fortifying Iran’s nuclear program and restarting missile production. U.S. officials emphasized that the attacks aimed to degrade Iran’s missile industry and prevent nuclear weapon development, with initial waves focusing on military assets via aircraft from regional bases and carriers.

The involvement of U.S. and Israeli forces was coordinated, with planning described as joint and extensive over months. President Donald Trump announced the commencement of “major combat operations” in a video statement and urged the Iranian people to rise up against the regime.

In response, Iran launched retaliatory missiles toward Israel and U.S. bases in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. No U.S. casualties have been reported as of this time, though smoke was seen billowing from a U.S. Military installation in Bahrain, which houses the U.S. 5th Fleet.

At least one civilian was killed by debris from a shot down missile in the UAE, while damage was reported in Kuwait, Jordan and other nations targeted by retaliatory strikes.

Military operations are ongoing as of this report.
