NEW: Iran Attacks French Base In The Persian Gulf
Two Iranian drones impacted a warehouse at Al Salam Naval Base in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The base, also known as Camp de la Paix, hosts French forces under a bilateral agreement with the UAE.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, specialised teams responded to the incident, which caused a fire in two containers holding general materials. No casualties occurred among Emirati or French personnel.
The UAE described the event as resulting from an attack by two Iranian drones, likely Shahed model kamikaze drones. Footage from the scene shows smoke billowing from the site of the impact.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for strikes on UAE military targets and indicated that the French base was indeed a target.
French Defense Minister confirmed the incident in a social media post, confirming that a hangar at the French naval base, adjacent to the Emirati facility, was damaged during a drone attack targeting the Abu Dhabi port area. Vautrin described the damage as limited and material only, with no injuries reported among French personnel.
In a statement issued alongside other European leaders on Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the nation’s military would be available to participate in defensive operations to protect regional partners from Iranian attacks.
