Zohran Mamdani’s Wife Caught In Major Scandal
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani spent his campaign trying to put daylight between himself and the most extreme anti-Israel voices on the far left. Now, his wife’s social media activity is pulling him right back into the fire.
An examination of Instagram activity shows Rama Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist married to Mamdani, liked multiple posts that celebrated Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The terrorist assault left nearly 1,200 Israelis and foreign workers dead, thousands wounded, 251 people kidnapped and included reports of sexual assault.
One post Duwaji liked was shared the day of the attack by The Slow Factory, which describes itself as “a school, knowledge partner and climate innovation organization” that “center[s] the voices and ideas of the Global Majority (Black, Indigenous, and other people of color) to share their knowledge outside the boundaries of institutions & oppressive systems.”
The post featured images pulled from livestreamed footage of the attack. One showed a bulldozer used to breach the barrier between Israel and Gaza. Another showed attackers riding on a captured Israeli military vehicle. Text on the images included “Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation,” “Resisting apartheid since 1948,” and “Systemic change for collective liberation.”
The caption argued that “if and when the occupation forces retaliate against this resistance” Gazans would be “punished for wanting freedom from apartheid.”
Duwaji liked the post using her personal account, which she has used to share political illustrations and criticize Israeli policy. Mamdani has interacted with that account in the past.
The tone of the post stands in sharp contrast to Mamdani’s public messaging, where he has described the Oct. 7 attack as “war crimes,” even while repeatedly condemning Israel’s military response.
Duwaji did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The mayor’s office did not answer questions about her activity or whether the couple discussed the Oct. 7 attacks at the time. Instead, City Hall repeated Mamdani’s standard position.
“Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7th was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally,” a City Hall spokesperson said in a statement.
The scrutiny does not stop with The Slow Factory. Duwaji also liked posts from The People’s Forum, a group described as part of Shanghai-based Maoist tech mogul Neville “Roy” Singham’s network of nonprofits that promote pro-China, pro-Russia and pro-Iran propaganda.
It is unclear when she liked the posts, but they were published Oct. 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas attack. The posts highlighted a Times Square rally The People’s Forum led alongside the Democratic Socialists of America and allied groups.
Mamdani, who was then a state assemblymember, publicly criticized that rally at the time for “making light” of Hamas’ massacre of civilians. But the posts Duwaji liked defended the rally and framed Hamas’ actions as justified.
Both captions used the slogan “from the river to the sea,” often interpreted as calling for Israel’s elimination. One included video of a crowd chanting: “Every colonized people, every occupied people has the right to self-defense.”
The images also showed signs reading “WHEN PEOPLE ARE OCCUPIED, RESISTANCE IS JUSTIFIED” and “RESISTANCE AGAINST OCCUPATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT.”
“Thousands have taken to the streets in #NYC to stand with Palestinian resistance and call for an end to all U.S. aid to apartheid Israel,” one caption said.
