An active shooter opened fire at a Michigan synagogue Thursday after a vehicle reportedly crashed into the building, according to local reports and officials.

Police sources in West Bloomfield Township confirmed to Fox2 Detroit that officers are responding to Temple Israel for an active shooter situation.

WDIV reported the suspect smashed a car into the synagogue before firing shots. Images obtained by the station showed a heavy law enforcement presence, with smoke visible coming from windows and a roof vent.

Video from the scene showed scores of police vehicles converging on the area, including units from Michigan State Police and neighboring departments, WDIV reported.

Temple Israel is a Reform Jewish congregation and has a preschool attached to the facility.

The West Bloomfield School District alerted families to the situation, saying, “We have been alerted by the West Bloomfield Police Department of a police situation in the community.”

The Jewish Federation of Detroit also issued a warning, urging people to stay clear while authorities respond.

“We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel. Law enforcement are responding,” the group said.

“Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time.”
