REPORT: Mojtaba Khamenei ‘Has No Idea He Is Supreme Leader’ Amid Coma
Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly so badly injured he is unaware he has been elevated to the country’s top post and does not know the Middle East is at war, according to a new report citing sources inside Tehran.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was named successor to his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after the longtime ruler was killed in a strike on Feb. 28.
A source in Tehran told the outlet that Mojtaba is in a coma at Sina University Hospital following an airstrike. The source said his condition is so severe he does not know about the fighting, the deaths of family members, including his wife and son, or his own selection as supreme leader.
The source also claimed Mojtaba is in intensive care under heavy security, with part of the hospital sealed off and guarded.
It remains unclear whether Mojtaba was injured in the same wave of strikes that killed his father, or in a separate attack. Another source, communicating through an exiled dissident in London, described extreme injuries.
“One or two of his legs have been cut off. His liver or stomach has also ruptured. He is apparently in a coma as well,” the source said.
That same source claimed Mojtaba is being treated by Health Minister Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, described as one of Iran’s top trauma surgeons.
Pentagon officials have publicly suggested the new leader is wounded. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday he believes Mojtaba is injured.
“We know the new so-called, not-so-supreme leader is wounded and likely disfigured,” Hegseth said at a press conference.
Iranian officials have acknowledged Mojtaba is wounded but have offered no clear details, fueling rumors and uncertainty inside the regime.
An Iranian official told The Telegraph the chain of command is rattled.
“No one knows anything about Mojtaba, whether he is alive or dead or how badly injured,” the official said. “We are all just told that he’s injured. He has no control over the war because he is not here. The majority of commanders, or more correctly, all commanders, have no news about him.”
The questions have only grown louder because Mojtaba has not appeared on camera since being announced as successor. His first message to the nation was read Thursday by a state TV anchor while a still image was displayed.

The statement vowed retaliation and doubled down on Tehran’s pressure campaign in the Gulf.
“We will avenge the blood of our martyrs,” the message said.
In the same remarks, Mojtaba framed Iran’s attacks as directed at U.S. forces, not neighboring states.
“We are not an enemy of the countries around us, and we are only targeting the bases of those Americans,” the statement said.
He also demanded U.S. bases in the region be shut down.

“The existence of the US bases in Iran’s neighbors and usage of those bases to attack Iran is not benefiting the region, and they must be closed,” the message said.
Even in Tehran, officials and analysts are struggling to separate battlefield reality from propaganda. Iranian state TV has referred to Mojtaba as Jaanbaz of Ramadan, meaning wounded war veteran, while outside reports describe a country effectively being steered by regional Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders as the war grinds on without a visible leader.
