GOP Rep Faced Terminal Diagnosis Before White House Doctors Intervened
President Donald Trump revealed that Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL) was told he could be dead by June due to a severe heart condition before a dramatic intervention by White House doctors helped turn the situation around.
The stunning account came during remarks alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson, who described the Florida congressman’s initial medical outlook as dire. Johnson first referenced the diagnosis while praising Dunn’s commitment to continuing his work in Congress despite the serious health concerns.
“[Dunn] had had a pretty grim diagnosis,” Johnson said. “I mentioned it to the president, and I said, ‘Congressman Dunn is a real champion and a patriot because he’s still coming to work.’ And if others got this diagnosis, they would be apt to go home and retire.”
“What was the diagnosis?” the president asked.
“It was… I mean, I think it was a terminal diagnosis,” Johnson said.
Trump then bluntly stated the gravity of the situation: “He would be dead by June.”
Johnson quickly noted that the information had not previously been public, adding, “OK, that wasn’t public, but yeah… it was grim.”

Rep. Dunn announced in January that he would retire at the end of his term. The congressman is from Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Panama City and Tallahassee.
He’s a physician and former Army surgeon who practiced urology in Panama City for 25 years before entering Congress. Dunn was first elected in 2016 and serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is vice chair of its Health Subcommittee.
Dunn’s condition was linked to a serious heart problem. Johnson explained that after learning about the situation, Trump reached out directly to the congressman to offer encouragement and gratitude for his dedication to continuing his duties despite the diagnosis.
“And the President mentioned in the course of the conversation, you know, how to get my doctors involved,” Johnson said. “And they did. And within a number of hours, they took him to Walter Reed emergency surgery.”
The rapid intervention, Johnson said, appears to have dramatically changed Dunn’s outlook.
“The man has a new lease on life,” the Speaker said. “He acts like he’s 30 years younger. And he walked into the conference meeting and we thought we’d seen a ghost.”
“I spoke with him over the weekend, and he’s encouraged and thankful, and he thanks the President for his leadership and intervention,” Johnson said.
Trump also shared additional details about the initial call he received regarding Dunn’s condition. He acknowledged that the news hit him on multiple levels.
“I said, that’s bad. Number one, it was bad because I liked him,” Trump said. “Number two, it was bad because I needed his vote.”
Despite the bleak diagnosis, Dunn reportedly told House leadership he planned to continue serving and voting for as long as he was physically able.
“He’s an extraordinary guy,” the Speaker said.
Following the intervention by White House doctors and emergency surgery at Walter Reed, Dunn’s condition appears to have stabilized significantly, giving colleagues new hope for his recovery.
