BREAKING: Shelter In Place Order Issued After Massive Explosion In Texas

A massive explosion tore through the Valero refinery in Port Arthur on Monday, sending a towering column of black smoke into the sky and triggering a full-scale emergency response across Jefferson County.

The blast hit the sprawling Gulf Coast facility just after midday, rattling nearby neighborhoods and putting residents on edge. Officials quickly urged people to stay indoors as fire crews and hazardous materials teams rushed in to contain the fire.

The thick plume of smoke could be seen for miles across Southeast Texas, raising fresh concerns about safety in one of the country’s busiest refining corridors as investigators work to determine what caused the explosion.

A Port Arthur Fire Department spokesperson told 12News NBC the cause of the explosion and fire is unknown at this time. Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens said there were no reported injuries and no evacuations were ordered.

Authorities moved fast to get the word out. “Residents on the west side of town are advised to shelter in place after the explosion,” Port Arthur police said. Minutes later, the warning expanded to include Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island and areas south of Highway 73, with officials urging residents to remain indoors.

Officials added that there were no immediate injuries and confirmed that “air quality and fire response are underway” as crews worked to bring the situation under control.

City of Port Arthur officials issued a shelter-in-place order for Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, South of Highway 73, and from Stirlwell Boulevard west.

12NewsNow reported that all refinery employees are accounted for.

The Valero refinery in Port Arthur is one of the largest in the United States, producing roughly 435,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel per day.
