NEW: Trump Reveals Top Secret Room Being Built Under Ballroom
President Donald Trump says a lawsuit he called “stupid” forced the administration to disclose sensitive plans tied to the new White House ballroom, including what he described as a military-built complex beneath it.
Trump, addressed the project while speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, after a New York Times report criticized the design and construction of the sprawling addition near where the East Wing once stood. Trump defended the effort and said the underground work is being carried out with military involvement.
“The military is building a big complex under the ballroom, which has come out recently because of a stupid lawsuit that was filed,” he said.
Trump also claimed the ballroom’s structure is designed to add protection to what’s below, referencing threats from drones and other attacks.
“The ballroom essentially becomes a shed [shield] for what’s being built under the military, including from drones, and including from any other thing,” Trump added. “The glass, or the windows, you see the big windows, the glass is extremely thick. It’s high-grade bulletproof glass, so all of the windows are bulletproof.”
The lawsuit Trump referenced was filed in December 2025 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The group is asking a federal judge to halt construction until the project undergoes multiple independent reviews, passes environmental assessments and receives approval from Congress. A federal judge has said he will rule by the end of March on whether to issue an injunction stopping construction while the case plays out.
Trump has argued the legal fight has made it harder to keep details under wraps. In a January Truth Social post, he said: “It is being done with the design, consent, and approval of the highest levels of the United States Military and Secret Service. The mere bringing of this ridiculous lawsuit has already, unfortunately, exposed this heretofore top secret fact,” Trump wrote.
An underground bomb shelter beneath the old East Wing, built during World War II, was demolished in October to clear space for the new ballroom project.

The Times report cited experts who faulted the proposed design, including what they described as a staircase that doesn’t lead anywhere and columns that could block views of windows. The report also criticized the scale of the ballroom, described as roughly 90,000 square feet.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hit back at the report and defended the project, saying it is being built without taxpayer funding and arguing the criticism came from the wrong people.
“President Trump and his lead architect have built world-class buildings around the world, and they are ensuring the People’s House finally has a beautiful ballroom that’s been needed for decades—at no expense to the taxpayer,” Leavitt posted on X.
Trump’s allies have framed the ballroom as a long-overdue upgrade to the White House’s event space. Critics, meanwhile, have questioned the project’s timing and optics as the administration juggles major domestic pressures and an escalating foreign policy agenda.
