NFL Quarterback Abruptly Retires At 31

NFL quarterback Chris Streveler, who spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets, announced Monday that he is retiring at 31.

Streveler posted a video on Instagram to break the news and thanked the game for the ride.

“I love football, but today is my last day as a football player,” he said, via the New York Post. “This game has given me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. This game has challenged me with obstacles I thought I’d never overcome.

“This game has forged lifelong bonds with people I would have never met otherwise. I’ve been playing this game since I was 8 years old. Today, I’m 31.”

Streveler’s pro path was anything but ordinary. After playing college football at Minnesota and South Dakota, he caught on in the NFL and joined the Cardinals in 2020. He never started a regular-season game for Arizona but appeared in seven contests, completing 17 of 25 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.

He later signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2022 but did not appear in a game. After Miami waived him, Streveler landed with the Jets and got his first career start late in the 2022 season as New York’s quarterback room cycled through injuries.

That start came in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Streveler finished 10 of 15 for 90 yards as the Jets lost 23-6. He was released before the 2023 season.

Streveler then headed north to the Canadian Football League, spending two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He served mostly as a backup, but was part of the club’s Grey Cup-winning roster that beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Now, the journeyman quarterback says he’s done chasing the next snap, closing the book on a career that took him from college stops to NFL Sundays and CFL championship celebrations.
