NEW: Major Shakeup Announced At Department Of War Hours After Bondi Firing
War Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to step down from his position and take immediate retirement, according to a report from CBS News citing sources familiar with the decision. The report was later confirmed by a number of additional outlets.
A War Department spokesman confirmed the move in a statement to Newsweek. “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to leave his post and take immediate retirement as the administration seeks a commander who can better implement the president’s vision for the Army,” the official said.
“We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army,” a separate official added. One source indicated that Hegseth wants someone in the role who will implement President Trump and Hegseth’s vision for the Army, CBS News reported.
The Army chief of staff serves as the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. Army and provides military advice to the secretary of the army, the secretary of War, and the president. The position involves oversight of Army readiness, training, and force structure.
General George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, assumed the position on September 21, 2023, after serving as the 38th Vice Chief of Staff.
A West Point graduate from the class of 1988 and a career infantry officer, George enlisted in the Army in 1982. He deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm as a lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Division. Later assignments included command of the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Iraq War and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, during the war in Afghanistan.
He also commanded the 4th Infantry Division and I Corps, and served as senior military assistant to then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023 for a standard four-year term that was expected to run until 2027.

The decision places General George among more than a dozen senior military officers who have departed or been removed during Hegseth’s tenure as War Secretary. Previous changes have included the ouster of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General C.Q. Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti, and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff General James Slife.
General Christopher LaNeve, the current Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and a former military aide to Hegseth, is expected to serve as acting Army chief of staff. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell described LaNeve as “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.”
The latest shakeup comes as the Trump administration continues operations related to the Iran conflict. President Donald Trump said in his national address that much of the U.S. Military objectives in the conflict had been obtained, adding that operations are expected to continue for two-three weeks.
